The PTDF Scholarship in other words the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), is an annual programme for MSc and PhD studies established by the Federal Government agency to supply Nigerian students with the intellectual foundation and skill set that will equip them in participating actively in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry towards the end of their studies.

This PTDF Scholarship, was put in place to enhance the Funds’ Overseas Scholarship Scheme thereby enabling the qualified candidates the opportunity to study in the world’s best universities with world-class facilities and also giving them the opportunity of experiencing other work environments in diaspora.

Requirements for PTDF Scholarship Award

Bear in mind that this Scholarship is highly a competitive one therefore it requires a grounded preparation before you can get selected.

Selection Criteria

Based on the submitted qualifications, the top applicants for each category from each state will be invited for an interview where a selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria:

  • Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts and other professional qualifications acquired
  • Relevant publications to be referenced by applicant (PhD applicants only)
  • Membership of professional bodies.
  • The viability and relevance of the study/research plan.
  • Relevance of previous studies to the oil and gas industry and the proposed course/research.

Other Requirements for PTDF Scholarship Award 

The first and foremost requirement of the PTDF Scholarship is that, you must be a citizen of Nigeria with the following honors:

For PhD Holders:

  1. You must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
  2. You must be computer literate enough.
  3. You must possess atleast five O’level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
  4. A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good post-graduate degree
  5. A research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than five pages) to include: topic, introduction, objective, methodology and mode of data collection.
  6. A letter by the lecturers from their Vice Chancellors confirming that they are not in receipt of any other scholarships.
  7. You must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and will be required to have verified it (NIMC verification charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

For MSc Holders:

  1. A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience.
  2. You must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
  3. You must be computer literate.
  4. Possession of five O’level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
  5. Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry and its expected impact on national development.
  6. You must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and will be required to have verified it (NIMC verification charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

Qualified Subject Area Required 

You must have studied in any of the following courses in the university:

  • Law
  • Pharmacy & Life Sciences
  • Business & Management
  • Computing
  • Energy
  • Engineering
  • Accounting & Finance
  • Architecture, Construction & Surveying

What are the Required Documents for PTDF Scholarship?

When making your application, you are are advised to scan the copies of the following documents and attach it to your online application forms:

  • National Identity Number (NIN)
  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result.
  • NYSC discharge certificate.
  • WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results as well as the PIN numbers on the application forms to enable PTDF view the O’level results on the relevant website.
  • Recent Passport Photograph.
  • Local Government Identification Letter.
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (PhD Applicants only).
  • Evidence of membership of professional associations.

How to Apply for the PTDF Scholarship Award

To successfully apply for the PTDF Scholarship, you will have to complete the following procedures:

  • Click here to create your application account and fill in your details correctly.
  • After filling in your details, an email with instructions on how to login and set your password will be sent to the email address you entered.
  • Login with your email as username and the password you created following the instructions sent to your email address.
  • When you must have logged in, you will have to verify your NIN to start a new application.
  • After NIN, you will be required to accept or decline the disclaimer of which you should accept.
  • Then go on to fill your form and attach the document being listed on this post already to complete your application.

Deadline: PTDF scholarship application closes six (6) weeks after the application form opens. Application for 2025 is yet to commence but it usually starts in March.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that this scholarship award also includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable), and the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses. Hence, candidates who has successfully scale through the first round of screening will be requested to submit their transcripts; all applicants are therefore advised to prepare their transcripts for submission in anticipation of such a request.
