10 Common Mistakes to Avoid While choosing IELTS exam date and center

1. Don’t be late. One principle of the exam is “first come first serve”. For this reason, candidates are encouraged to book their test dates on time to avoid missing out on the popular schedules.

2. Don’t apply when you have not viewed the test dates and centers. IELTS exam dates are set in advance by the British Council and IDP for each country and test center. Therefore, candidates not apply for the exam without first going through the whole schedule.

3. Do not choose a date you cannot keep to. Before choosing your IELTS date, plan your calendar better and ensure nothing very cogent happens on that same day you’re meant to write your test.

4. Avoid picking  a date that may cause urgency. Pick an exam date at least 2 months before the actual test. This would help you prepare yourself and also have time to cancel or reschedule the exam date for yourself if anything changes. Rushing to pick a date a few weeks or about a month before the exam leaves you in a rush and confusion may set in at some point.

5. Avoid picking  center you’re not very familiar with, or a place far from your house. Ensure to pick an available center close to you or where you can easily move to.

6. Ensure you pick the exam module which best aligns with your exam. These dates include options for both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests. Check very well and differentiate between dates for AC only and dates for GT & AC.

7. Do not let someone register for IELTS on your behalf. This is one risk some people which I see as unnecessary. The IELTS exam registration is available both online and physically. Which means you can apply online you apply in person. Any mode you choose, ensure you’re present during the process to avoid imputing wrong information. Any information provided on the IELTS Website goes a long way to affect you. It may not affect your score but it may affect you when you want to use it.

How to Cancel or Reschedule your IELTS Test Date

Yes, there are unforeseen circumstances which may arise as you wait for the day of your exam which may warrant you not to take the test in that particular day. For this reason, the British Council and IDP have made it possible to reschedule your IELTS test date.

However, bear it in mind that canceling or rescheduling your exam date will not be possible once you have less than 5 weeks to your exam. In other words, all applications to cancel or reschedule IELTS test must be done at least, 5 weeks to the test.

Also note that application for cancellation or rescheduling by phone call will not hold. You must apply in person or send an email to the appropriate address.
