There are several reasons why people travel abroad to study. Some travel on fully funded scholarships, partial scholarship or even fully paid education abroad. Some people also study abroad to maintain their social standards. Some move abroad because they can afford it, while others move abroad as a way of seeking life changing opportunities.
But are these reasons worth it? Why should one leave his own country to study in another man’s land when he has schools in his own country?
These questions have been asked by so many searchers and I will give you the exact answer in this post.

Like I mentioned earlier, there are so many reasons why people choose to study overseas. Some have the dumbest reasons in the world while some have the most crucial reasons. However, whatever reason that takes you there, it’s worth it. Here are some of the reasons:
1. Free Scholarship
One could move abroad on fully funded scholarship. Yes, there are several 100% free scholarships out there for undergraduates or postgraduates.
This type of scholarship is usually sponsored by an NGO, educational institution, company, the government agency or any other supported groups.
Fully funded scholarships involves free accommodation, tuition fully paid, allowance and other benefits attached to it. The scholar has little or no expenses to incur.
In some cases, beneficiary of a full scholarship is entitled to a job after his education or any other benefit once the programme is completed.
What are steps required to win a fully free scholarship. First, gaining this type of scholarship is based on merit. So, you need to work hard and smart to get to that point.

Other forms of scholarships which could take one abroad include partial or or full tuition scholarship.
2. Social Status
Some people send their children abroad to study due to their standing in the society. For instance, most rich men in African countries prefer to send their children to European, Asian or American schools to study. They believe it gives a different form of prestige to have a graduate from an international university.
That being said, maintaining good societal standing is another reason to study abroad.
3. In Search of Life Changing Opportunities
Seeking a life changing opportunity abroad is just too genuine for me. For an average citizen of a country, moving to another country means giving room to better opportunities.
Frankly speaking, international education offers several opportunities like connections, better job opportunities, quality education, access to advanced technology, access to environments which ordinarily you would have accessed in your own country, new skill, work and study opportunities, earning in currency with higher exchange value, etc.
The last one is always the reason why people, especially those from third world countries, move abroad.
Imagine earning in British Pound or in US Dollars and converting it to your local currency.
For instance, as at the time this post was published, British Pound exchange rate was #2,000/£. A Nigerian in the UK who works, studies and earns £1,500 monthly and saves £500 monthly. In 3 years (let’s say his study program is 3 years), he saves £18,000 which when converted to Nigerian Naira it amounts to 2,000 x 18,000 = 36,000,000 Naira.
For a Nigerian citizen who lives in Nigeria, saving 36M in 3 years is almost impossible due to the rate of inflation in the country. So, in search of better living opportunities, people travel abroad using student visa.
4. Contract
In case you do not know, some people study abroad based on contract. In this case, they agree with a firm, organization, group or government to gain international education after which they return to work or perform a particular task for the organization or group.
This type of scholarship exists within a specific time.
From time to time, the government of Nigeria offers such opportunities to Nigerian graduates, where they take 1 or 2 years study programmes abroad and then return to teach in a Nigerian educational institution or any other institution, depending on the agreement.
So many students have seized this opportunity to move beyond the sores of the country.
To be eligible for this type of scholarship in Nigeria, you must be a graduate.
5. To Take a Specific Course
Some people actually want to take a specific course but unfortunately, they are not offered in Nigeria.
For instance, Aeronautics is the science of flights, learning how to design aeroplane or other flying machines.
This particular course may require one to move abroad as it may not be offered in any university in the country.
